Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D

Rated R 105 minutes 2012

Let’s see if we got this straight. An epidemic of vampirism, born in the South among decadent slave holders, is threatening to overwhelm mid-19th-century America, and it’s up to Honest Abe (Benjamin Walker) to use his rail-splitting axe to stop the evil undead critters in a decisive conflict, aka the Civil War. Whoo-ee. Has all the potential to be a hilarious, smart spoof of history (and the distaste for same in the audience), but director Timur Bekmambetov – working from a script by novelist Seth Grahame Smith, author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – takes the dumb way home and turns in just another monster mash with vamps zipping around the landscape at warp speed while the redundant cast (Dominic Cooper, Rufus Sewell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead) trails along behind in mutton chops and crinoline. A waste of perfectly good comic material. (105 min.)
