The pulse of the track “Electric Pow Wow Drum” is a resonant drum and clinking metal. It’s quickly buried by woozy keyboards and a chorus of voices with wildly varying pitches. In the context of mainstream, festival-ready EDM, the song’s traits of traditional Native American singing and percussion at first sound entirely out of place. Quickly though, as with most tracks by A Tribe Called Red, “Electric Pow Wow Drum” makes a strong case for the synthesis. Formed in Ottawa in 2010 by three descendants of the indigenous Canadian population known as First Nations, A Tribe Called Red merges powwow sounds with electronic music, quickly growing out of its community and on to international audiences. No, this is not an appropriate show to don Native-American headgear at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland), nor is there ever. However, powwow-step is now a thing.
