A Special Evening with Joe Sample & Lalah Hathaway

When: Fri., Nov. 27, 8 & 10 p.m., Sat., Nov. 28, 8 & 10 p.m. and Sun., Nov. 29, 7 & 9 p.m. 2009

Born into an R&B dynasty, Lalah Hathaway ultimately secured notoriety in her own right. Her deep, expressive, powerhouse voice recalls that of father Donny, but Lalah also has a soft side. She got her break in the new jack swing era, recording a spate of hits with chunky synthesizers, programmed drums, and heartbreak lyrics. As she got older, though, her tastes got a lot more sophisticated. In 1999, Lalah hooked up with jazz keyboardist Joe Sample to record an album of crystalline ballads. The two of them will reconvene this week at Oakland Yoshi’s (510 Embarcadero). Friday, Nov. 27, and Saturday, Nov. 28, at 8 & 10 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 29, at 7 & 9 p.m., $40. Yoshis.com
