A Most Wanted Man

Rated R 121 minutes United States 2014

Three years after the splendid Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy comes another John le Carré spy novel adaptation, and the impact is mixed and somewhat compromised, despite the presence of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his last roles. The myriad themes and plot threads of le Carré’s book – centered around the appearance of a mysterious Russian refugee in Hamburg, Germany, circa 2008 -- are too many and too varied for a standard-length theatrical movie to handle adequately. And the gaps show. It might have made a better TV mini-series. But that’s not to discount the work of the late Hoffman (as a German anti-terrorist official), Rachel McAdams (idealistic social worker), Robin Wright (CIA op), Willem Dafoe (private banker), German players Nina Hoss and Daniel Brühl, and Russian actor Grigoriy Dobrygin as Issa Karpov. Directed with routine efficiency by Anton Corbijn. Even a lesser le Carré adaptation is better than none at all (122 min.).
