A Merry Forking Christmas

When: Dec. 26-30, 8 p.m. 2010

The original Forking was a choose-your-own-adventure play about sex, which may just be the most inspired concept that PianoFight has ever employed. Naturally, the Christmas theme offered fewer possibilities. But playwright Daniel Heath (who penned the first Forking) found a few ways to liven it up, mostly by incorporating a weed-dealing Santa Claus (Derek Fisher) and a bickering engaged couple (Rachel Ferensowicz and Alex Boyd). The storylines are purposefully thin, mostly to allow audience members to steer the characters' destinies. At several points in the play, Arlen Hart plays a two-bar riff on the piano, and we vote by applause to decide what happens next. Well, that's exciting. Merry Forking Christmas benefits from good character-acting and some delicious sketch comedy by Jed Goldstein and Gabi Patacsil, who trade off on multiple roles. Through December 30 at Off-Market Theaters (965 Mission St., San Francisco). $20-$30.
