A Girl Cut in Two

Rated NR 2008

Actor Benoît Magimel, as a spoiled Lyonnais playboy, pretty much steals Claude Chabrol’s 68th feature film, the story of an unlikely love triangle involving a blithely self-involved TV weather girl (blond Ludivine Sagnier); a rich, lecherous novelist with a taste for orgies (François Berléand); and Magimel’s foppish lout, heir to a chemical fortune. The screenplay — by Chabrol and stepdaughter Cécile Maistre — isn’t one of the French master’s most profound, but the machine-like ruination of the guilty is something to behold (115 min.).
