A Ghost Story

Rated R 90 minutes 2017

A figure in a sheet, with cut-out holes for eyes, haunts a house through several generations in writer-director David Lowery’s over-wrought allegorical ghost story, starring Casey Affleck as the spook and Rooney Mara as his widow. Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) seems to be telling us that time is cyclical, and that existence is an illusion. Other, more coherent films have put forth that concept more gracefully, without the man-in-the-bedsheet mute narrator as a guide. We’re naturally leery of bite-size explanations of the transitory nature of being, and you should be, too. The overriding melancholy of the universe smothers everything in an easy-to-parody syrup of Terrence Malick-style music and camera shots. Beware (87 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
