Sameer Gupta is one of the leading voices in the vibrant Indian raga music revival happening in New York City. He’s the co-founder and artistic director of the collective Brooklyn Raga Massive, which has helped maintain the traditions of raga music but also give it room to grow and evolve in the modern era. He’s also a well-studied player of the tabla, the Indian percussion instrument. Before all of that, he was a jazz drummer out here on the West Coast. His latest project, A Circle Has No Beginning, combines these elements into a curious cross-cultural experience where no boundary separates the various genres and cultural experiences. For his upcoming gig in Berkeley, he’ll play the drums and tabla, backed by David Boyce on reeds/pedals, Prasant Radhakrishnan on Carnatic sax, Ross Hammond on slide guitar, Marika Hughes on cello, Charith Premawardhana on viola, and Rashaan Carter on bass.
