A Bag of Marbles

Rated NR 110 minutes 2018

A comparatively light-hearted movie on a grim subject. Filmmaker Christian Duguay’s World War II drama follows the perilous journey of a pair of young Jewish boys forced to run away from their Paris home on their own to the South of France during the German Nazi occupation. The kids, played by French actors Dorian Le Clech and Batyste Fleurial Palmieri, manage to have a little fun pulling pranks and falling love while dodging the boches, the Milice and the collabos, but the threat of deportation and death always hovers. The story is worth seeing, especially for Holocaust-movie aficionados. In addition to director Duguay, four different writers helped adapt the novel by Joseph Joffo, the younger of the two real-life refugee brothers. (110 min., 2017, not rated)
