Best Art Gallery for People Under Thirty

Good Mother Gallery

When brothers Ian and Jared Jethmal and co-conspirator Calvin Wong opened Good Mother Gallery earlier this year, their primary intention was to create a space to show the work that they wanted to see on local gallery walls — work that they appreciated, but weren't seeing enough of in Oakland galleries. Being three artists in their early-to-mid twenties, the Jethmal brothers and Wong chose to highlight fresh aesthetics that naturally resonate well with others their age. Since opening, Good Mother has become a hub of activity for young creatives — hosting not just art shows, but zine fairs, record swaps, and record release shows. But just because the gallery's patronage falls on the youthful side of the spectrum doesn't mean the space is amateurish. The curatorial execution represents utmost professionalism — although opening receptions can draw large and sometimes rowdy crowds. Nothing wrong with celebratory art gatherings.
