The Bay Area is damn beautiful. Thanks to the Bay Trail, people can bike this five-hundred-mile shoreline trail that spans the entire Bay Area. The trail loops all the way up to Napa and down to San Jose, with especially scenic stretches through Oakland, Albany, and Berkeley. The trail was initiated thanks to a state Senate bill passed in 1987 directing the Association of Bay Area Governments to create a loop through the Bay Area. The group created the Bay Area Trail Plan in 1989 to develop this proposed stretch, which is now governed by a board of 28 volunteers. The trail lets people get the chance to bike through some of California's most famous foliage and scenery, including the coastal redwoods and the cliff sides of the bay. Plus the stretches are well-maintained, allowing for an adventurous and active daytrip without the hassle of having to bushwhack.
