When: Thu., May 19, 8:30 p.m. 2011

Cocktails and contemporary dance mingle on Thursday, May 19, when eight choreographers perform dances in an eight-by-eight-foot (give or take) space at The Uptown (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). The occasion is the sixth annual 8x8x8, a relaxed, refreshing, and sometimes raucous showcase for Bay Area dance artists that has become so popular it moved to the Uptown to accommodate its enthusiastic audience. Emerging and established performers from around the bay join in, and this year paufve dance, ahdanco, Janet Das, Navarrete x Kajiyama, Lisa Townsend, Dandelion Dancetheater (in its punk-rock incarnation Bandelion), and the duo of MelecioEstrella and Andrew Ward will show favorite pieces and works in progress. Portland, Oregon's Gregg Bielemeier snuck in, too -- the more, the merrier ... up to eight, of course. 8:30 p.m., $8. 510-451-8100 or
