56 Up

Rated NR 143 minutes 2013

Thirteen of the original seven-year-olds in this remarkable documentary series are still on board, and now they’re nearing retirement age. Paul Almond, the original Granada Television director of 7 Up, joins long-running auteur Michael Apted to one again check in with Tony the cabbie, the three Cockney-girl best friends, Nick the farm-lad-turned-nuclear-physicist, Neil the lonely seeker, and the rest of the group of subjects — all of them British, all but one white — chosen in 1964 for Almond and Apted’s emotionally involving, ongoing study of human nature, a sort of panoramic soap opera taken in short, seven-year bursts. (144 min.)
