5-K R.A.C.E.

When: Sat., July 4, 8 a.m. 2009

If the parade is a little too stately for you on July 4, get out of your lawn chair and make a run for it. The City of Alameda wraps up its Independence Day celebration with a 5-K R.A.C.E. (Ralph Appezzato Charity Event, named for a former mayor) that makes room for competitive runners of all ages. The $50 entry fee goes to a variety of local charities, and is the wrap-up for the town's annual march of dancers, high school bands, karate clubs, and service organizations. Those who can't run can walk, and those who don't want to do either can sit back and be grateful that the parade won't end with that guy picking up horse poop as the final act. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at 1416 Park St., Alameda. or 510-523-2647
