4th of July at the Berkeley Marina

When: Fri., July 4, 12-6 p.m. 2008

Leave it to Berkeley to come up with a Fourth of July celebration that features a character named Madame Ovary, deputized to hand out recycled materials to anyone wanting to redecorate his stroller or bicycle. And that's just one quirky part of a celebration at the Berkeley Marina that will feature such cherished anachronisms as sack races and one-man bands, along with worldlier pleasures like dragon boat rides, belly dancers, and Emeryville Taiko. Local vendors and restaurateurs will sell savory international cuisine, and Kickin' the Mule will perform old-school blues with vocalist Freddie Hughes. (If you've never heard him sing a Sam Cooke cover at Pat's Bar in Oakland, you're in for a treat.) Noon-9 p.m.; fireworks start at 9:30 p.m., free. AnotherBullwinkelShow.com
