35 Shots of Rum (35 rhums)

Rated NR 100 minutes 2010

Filmmaker Claire Denis’ quiet, observational, multi-character portrait of contemporary Paris takes place in that slice of the city where you can go about your business for days and never see a white face. Chief character is Lionel (Alex Descas), a Metro train operator whose university student daughter Jo (Mati Diop) lives with him. Both of them are experiencing love troubles. But then almost everyone in director/co-writer Denis’ scenario (written with Jean-Paul Fargeau) is looking for love, or maybe just a little respect. Both are hard to find. Stick with this and you’ll be rewarded (100 min.).
