Classics-division-style remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford "adult Western" makes fine use of actors Russell Crowe (as a dandified brute of an outlaw gang leader), Christian Bale (a poor-but-honest rancher), Peter Fonda (a tough old coot), and a posse full of nasty desperados fussin' and cussin' violently in Old Arizona. The plot revolves around the rancher, who sincerely needs the bounty for delivering the outlaw to the train to prison -- and who goes through hell to collect it. Director James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted; Walk the Line) amps up the blood and thunder without sacrificing the moral complexity of Elmore Leonard's original short story (updated by writers Michael Brandt and Derek Haas), and the actors do the rest. Costarring Ben Foster, Logan Lerman, Gretchen Mol, and Alan Tudyk.
