3 D Film Festival

When: April 30-May 6 2010

Three-dimensional film first took off in the 1950s, and it's returned in recent months with movies such as Avatar, Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland, Coraline, and How to Tame Your Dragon. While these films have varied in quality, they've all offered the pleasure of added depth perception and a more visceral viewing experience. The huge, gothic brambles in Tim Burton's Wonderland seemed to scrape the edges of the screen. The forest floor in Avatar rolled out under viewers' feet, like a green carpet leading to a jungle clotted with wildflowers and lush vegetation. This week, the Grand Lake Theater (3200 Grand Ave., Oakland) celebrates 3D stereoscopy with its own 3D Film Festival, featuring screenings of Avatar, Coraline, and Upon a new Christie Digital projection system. Friday through Thursday, Apr. 30-May 6. $5, glasses provided. 510-452-3556 or RennaissanceRialto.com
