A provocative documentary look at the currents and eddies of American violence – in this instance, the 2012 case of a middle-aged white man who pumped ten handgun rounds into a car full of unarmed African-American teenagers, killing one of them, in a Jacksonville, Florida parking lot because he objected to their loud rap music. Writer-director Marc Silver (Who Is Dayani Crystal?) takes a cool-headed, gently emotional approach to the murder and its trial, not so much searching for answers but letting the anguish and hysteria drain out of the situation as he gingerly probes the terrain. That approach brings the story to life better than any issue-driven doc could (85 min.).
