24 City

Rated NR 112 minutes 2008

Filmmaker Jia Zhang Ke’s indisputably arty combination of documentary and narrative tells of an aircraft factory in the Chinese hinterlands being dismantled and converted into a luxury condo development, and the memories that transformation unleashes in the plant’s former laborers — the most orderly group of factory workers an American could ever imagine. The factory demolition is pure doc but many of the interviewed workers are played by actors, including the ubiquitous Joan Chen as “Little Flower.” Worth the trip if you’re in the neighborhood (112 min.).
