21 Jump Street

Rated R 110 minutes 2012

Just beneath the surface of the sex and dope jokes in this joyously lowbrow rehab of the late-Eighties/early-Nineties TV series about young undercover cops in a high school, there’s a tale of two actors and their careers. One thread involves Jonah Hill, the slimmed-down “fat nerd” character from Superbad and Moneyball, trying to reshape his image. The other is about Channing Tatum, the jock hunk from The Vow and The Eagle, who’s learning to flex his comedy muscles. Channing wins, Hill stalls. Two probationary cops cavort in a young-male-fantasy-land where cops get blowjobs during car chases and Ice Cube is the boss police detective. Biggest revelation: Kids have changed since 2005 — they’re all PC now. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the team who gave us Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Actor Hill, who co-exec-produced with Tatum, wrote the story with screenwriter Michael Bacall, adapted from the old Johnny Depp TV show. (110 min.)
