20th Century Women

Rated R 118 minutes 2017

Annette Bening deserves a major acting award for her role as a befuddled single mom in Mike Mills’ “anti-nostalgic nostalgia pic” about a mismatched household in Santa Barbara, circa 1979. The Bening character’s son, played by Lucas Jade Zumann, is the putative catalyst of the piece as a conflicted (what else?) teenager, but Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Billy Crudup do most of the heavy lifting as members of the retinue, in a setting that places a high premium on the philosophical – with smarty-pants dialogue to match. Mills, who made Beginners and Thumbsucker, has this thinking person’s family sitcom-ish thing down pat. (118 min., 2016, rated R) (Kelly Vance)
