The East Bay represents in this year’s festival with three stand-out film-makers. Alameda’s Dani Chaparro’s Consonance is an experimental film that meditates on a quote by James Baldwin. RUN!, directed by Oakland’s Malic Amalya and filmed at the Trinity Site where the first atomic bomb was detonated along the edges of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is a meditation on nuclear technology and the issue of transgender individuals fighting in the U.S. military. Neelu Bhuman’s Transfinite, produced by Richmond’s Stefano Gonzalez, presents seven stand-alone short stories where supernatural trans and queer people from various cultures use their powers to protect, love, teach, fight, and thrive. Whether mystic, silly or profound, this festival always shows the complexity of lives on the transgender spectrum.
