Director Oliver Hirschbiegel delves into the history books to tell the tale of one of the true unsung heroes of the 20th century: Georg Elser (played by Christian Friedel), a modest carpenter from a small Southern German town who tried, and failed, to blow up Adolf Hitler in Munich in 1939, and paid for his deed. Actor Friedel’s boyish demeanor contrasts forcefully with Elser’s iron political will and sense of moral justice. The leftish factory worker Elser sincerely believed the Nazi dictator needed to be stopped in order to save lives in WWII. The screenplay, by attorney-writer Fred Breinersdorfer and his daughter Léonie Claire Breinersdorfer, may lack the suspense and bravura of some other anti-Nazi true-story dramatizations, but more than makes up for that with its strong characterizing, featuring Katharine Schüttler, Burghart Klaussner, Johann von Bülow, and David Zimmerschied as various Nazis and their foes (110 min., 2015, rated R) (K.V.)
