12th Annual Arab Film Festival

When: Sat., Oct. 25, 12-9 p.m. and Sun., Oct. 26, 12-8 p.m. 2008

In spite of, or perhaps because of, its ongoing political turbulence, the Middle East has produced a school of insightful, provocative, and often dark-humored filmmakers. For more than a decade, the Arab Film Festival has highlighted worthy contemporary filmmakers whose work may never get mass distribution. This year's selections include such compelling documentaries as Khadija Al-Salami's Amina, about a Yemeni woman who faces the death penalty for murdering her husband, and Jackie Salloum'sSlingshot Hip-Hop, about the rise of Palestinian hip-hop group DAM. The 12th Annual Arab Film Festival runs Oct. 16-28 in locations throughout the Bay Area, with screenings Oct. 23 at the Parkway Theater (1834 Park Blvd., Oakland) and Oct. 24-26 at Landmark's Shattuck Cinemas (2230 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). DAM performs at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24at EastSide Cultural Center (2277 International Blvd., Oakland). AFF.org
