120 Minutes: Anniversary Party

When: Fri., Sept. 2, 10 p.m. 2011

Head to the Elbo Room on Friday night -- if not for the 120 Minutes showcase anniversary party, then just to see Chelsea Wolfe. Granted, Wolfe isn't the first artist that comes to mind when you hear the word "celebrate" -- she's someone you'd more likely associate with, you know, "dirge." But the once Sacramento-, now Los Angeles-based performer and songwriter has plenty to be happy about, including the past week's release of her band's brand-new LP, Apokalypsis. It's a breakout album and a major success: Wolfe's echoey, sinister songs conjure up the darkest of metal imagery while elegantly incorporating more mellow, almost proggy instrumentals. The event will also feature sets from resident DJs and 120 Minutes regulars Whitch, Nako and GuMMyBeAR. It also promises "secret surprises" for its revelers. At Elbo Room (647 Valencia St., San Francisco) on Friday, Sept. 2. 10 p.m., $8,10.
