Rated NR 2005

Greg Marck's dramedy focuses on the interactions of disparate, desperate people in the minutes before and after the titular time, but there's simply too many ironies in the fire here. Built around a nasty series of accidents that ruin several lives, 11:14's elaborate mechanisms of sarcastic grisliness make it closer to the Final Destination series than to such skewed-narrative classics as Run Lola Run and Memento. You can have fun putting the pieces together, but the resultant jigsaw puzzle has a cold hole in its center. Of the large cast, only a dentally challenged Hilary Swank (as a convenience-store clerk) and Shawn Hatosy (as her rather dim robber) make substantial positive impressions; everyone else seems to deserve their fate, with death by bowling ball and castration by car window among the most lurid examples.
