Remember Jazzercise?

SAT 4/5

Jazzercise is still around, minus the leg warmers and Olivia Newton-John headbands. Going strong since 1969, Jazzercise classes are offered all over the East Bay and attract all ages, sizes, shapes, and colors (still mostly women, however). It’s a more “dance-y” type of aerobics, with most classes consisting of a warm-up, aerobic workout, and a stretching and muscle-toning segment using mat exercises and weights to work the legs, arms, abs, and all-important derriere. The intensity of the workout can be adjusted to your fitness level, which makes it appropriate for everyone from senior citizens and/or overweight folks to those in training for the remake of Flashdance. The new Jazzercise Fitness Center of El Cerrito is now open in the remodeled and relocated Vital Building. Instructors Janie Vitale and Amanda Raphael teach regular classes there Mondays through Saturdays along with a 30- to 45-minute “Cardio Quick” class weekdays at noon for a fast lunch-hour workout. Visit the open house Saturday, April 5, 10 a.m. Walk-in: $12 per class. Monthly passes available. C’mon, Eat It

Hunger Hike in the hills

During World War II, young Elisabeth Rothschild learned to supplement her diet with edible plants such as the stinging nettle. She became knowledgeable about medicinal and edible plants, and years later, in 1994, the Berkeley-based hunger-relief advocate began the Elisabeth Rothschild Hunger Hike. The annual hike’s twin goals are to raise funds for the Alameda County Food Bank — which helps the estimated 160,000 county residents at risk of experiencing hunger from poverty — and also to educate hikers about the useful plants that grow in the East Bay.This Saturday, April 5, in Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park, participants can choose from a 5K Nature Hike led by guides describing plants’ uses, or a 5K Redwoods Romp for the fun of it. Both begin at 10 a.m. Registration is $20 per person; contact Jennifer Gleason at 510-834-3663×328. www.accfb.org — Kelly Vance

WED 4/2

Safe at Home

The A’s were disappointed not to travel to Japan for that curious “home-away” two-game series with Seattle, but with the trip scratched for security reasons, the Athletics can relax — as much as anyone can at a public event in wartime — and play the two makeup games in their real home. Wednesday night’s (7:05) originally scheduled Game 2 vs. Ichiro & Co. is followed by an added third game Thursday at 12:05 p.m. (the other Mariners makeup is June 30). Then the Anaheims come to call for a three-pack series that should indicate early on who’s zooming whom in the American League West this season. It’s a great chance for Ken Macha’s talent-laden team to establish itself. Be there. athletics.mlb.com — Kelly Vance
