.What War’s Good For

Fuck the muckety-mucks in West Oakland.

Liminal ain’t exactly the place to protest the war this weekend. Sure, Friday night’s event is called The Fuck War Party: A Sleazepop Art Insurgency. But “this isn’t a protest rally,” says Fuck War organizer Philip Boyok. “It’s a party, an art party. Kids wanna dance and laugh and make out and get drunk, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen.” But they will be getting it on amid some radical sights and sounds, for sure. Boyok (who works for the Express‘ sister paper, SF Weekly) and his cohorts have put together a electro-dance-punk lineup not to be sneezed or sneered at. There’s Gold Chains and SueCie, kid606, Seattle’s the Fitness, SF’s Paradise Boys, Sarah Delush, Avenue D, and littlecat. Getting such a high-powered lineup was pretty easy, Boyok says: “Everyone I talk to are pissed off, stupefied, or scared shitless.”

The Fuck War art will work you into a forward-thinking lather, too. Video installation artists will rock nine projectors — some stationary, some movable — through a matrix server to wreak optic havoc on three-dimensional targets, including shaped, hanging Plexiglas and an installation by Oakland guerrilla artist DKOI. Some of the projections are by Kenneth Kin Hung, whose Web site, 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111.com, is a Superbad-style shoot-’em-up wherein a Palestinian shoots a Coke bottle at the President Select, dressed up like the Hamburglar at “Meccadonald’s.” See? That could be projected on you while you make out!

And don’t worry if all this good-timery seems like an inappropriate response to the situation overseas. “The music is dark, hard, danceable,” Boyok says, “perfect for the message we are promoting, which is a collective FUCK YOU to all this incredulous bullshit, with a smile on our faces. We are turning their messages upside down and shaking them to a vicious beat, rock ‘n’ roll.”

Liminal Arts Gallery, 2000 Myrtle St., Oakland, 8 p.m. Info: NSurgency.com. $12 at the door, $8 in advance at Groove Tickets.com
