Amidst psychedelic moods and unforgettable melodies, Essex Green’s newest album aims to evoke a yearning for escape: escape from the city (Brooklyn); hypocritical relationships; and the past heartbreaks. Behind ’60s organ, British-style country (think: The Mekons), and male/female vocal interplay à la Belle and Sebastian, the talented three-piece also reflects on wandering, often-fantastical travels and finding home. Chugging, swinging “Elsinore” proves singer and keyboardist Sasha Bell can bring the sassy Holly Golightly to mind. Gritty, upbeat “Don’t Know Why (You Stay)” uses swift, sing-along harmonies to highlight a sneering disposition. “Snakes in the Grass” pipes and puffs while Bell refuses to tell us what’s wrong: Oh I can’t, it’s convoluted, she professes atop tinkering keys and contagious stop-start rhythms. Opener “This Isn’t Farmlife” stands out as the album’s most infectious track for its snappy beats, chilling builds, and clever lyricism. Pretty, polished, and swimming in folk-pop textures, Cannibal Sea can be your escape too.
