Music livens up the slopes

3/19-3/20

Tired of sitting in traffic in the resort parking lot, waiting in line at the lift, then getting cut off on the slope by some jerk who thinks he’s Bode Miller? Do you feel skiing just doesn’t have enough bluegrass music? The Telegrass Festival at Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort may be the answer, with telemark clinics, events and equipment demos, and great bluegrass bands. Telemarking is also called “free-heel” skiing for its lack of heel-to-ski lock-in. This added flexibility means, once you’ve mastered the skills, you can head into the backcountry to see beautiful winter landscapes and ski untouched slopes. Experienced telemarkers take ski-camping trips and climb up steep hills using “skins” attached to their skis. Telemark skiers can also practice their technique on regular downhill ski slopes.

This weekend at Sierra-at-Tahoe, spend the morning at the clinics or, if you’re more experienced, take a backcountry tour led by ski patrol staff. In the afternoon, relax outside the lodge with the bluegrass bands Bluegrass Stomp, Harmony Grits (both Bay Area-based), Stay Tuned, Donner Mountain, and the Avalanche Dawgs. Registration from 9-10:30 a.m. each day. Music from noon to 5:30-6 p.m. $90 for two days; $50 for one day only. Discounts available for lift tickets and/or guided tours. Hoops hustle in Hayward

Though they’ve been involved for only three years, the Bay Area Regional Parks District All-Stars have made a name for themselves in the California/Nevada wheelchair basketball league, winning last year’s Shasta Lakers Tournament under the leadership of coach and player Tom King. They’ll be participating in the BORP Hoops Classic this weekend, as will the BORP Bay Cruisers youth team, who won national championship trophies at both the varsity and JV levels last year. How will they fare this time around, as they host teams from Bakersfield, Reno, Redding, Sacramento, and Stockton? See how the home-court advantage plays out at the Cal State Hayward gymnasium, with games going from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. Admission is free; BORP.org or 510-849-4663. — Stefanie Kalem
