You won’t have to drive to San Mateo or even wait for the birthday of Malcolm X to get your daily jazz fix. The Cheese Board Pizza Collective features live musicians during lunch and dinner hours five days a week. This place gets as hot as anything you’ll find on the jazz-boat nightclubs floating on the River Seine without the trouble of flying to Paris. Scat singers, piano and vocals, piano and bass, trios, quartets — it’s all happening here for free. You don’t even have to buy any pizza (though you’d be a masochist not to): Sometimes the crowd listening on the sidewalk outside gets as big as the crowd chowin’ down inside. This hoppin’ and poppin’ venue features everything from impromptu improv to standards, with regular musicians and lots of fly-by-nighters who sit in for a set here and there. There’s even a CD for sale featuring an extensive sampling of the regular Pizza Collective players.
