Only a few people in the uptown Oakland club scene are more wrathful than the coat-check woman at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle — and guess what? They all work a block away, at @Seventeenth. If there’s one thing the bouncers here have in common, it’s that they love to hate — so much, in fact, that KMEL DJs Chuy Gomez and Sana G. have been known to joke about it on their Saturday morning “Top Twenty” countdown. These dapper young men in cocktail suits and bow ties have made it their purpose in life to hate jeans, sneakers, LRG tracksuits, or even those stylish winter bootie things. Oftentimes, it doesn’t even matter if you’re brandishing one of those spiffy playa passes from Newtrendz Entertainment. The idea, of course, is to retain a wall-to-wall grown-and-sexy dress code that accords with the club’s decor (similar to Umbrellas of Cherbourg, in which Catherine Deneuve’s outfit always matches the wallpaper). The not-so-sexy are relegated to … oh, Radio Bar, or something.
