.Meekest Person, Place, or Thing: Bravely enduring injury without resentment

Tracy

As the third anniversary of the Iraq war passed, the city of Tracy scored an unwanted tally: five residents killed. In the East Bay exurb of 80,000, Tracy has one of the state’s highest per-capita rates of military personnel killed in Iraq. The city’s downtown war memorial is a slab of black granite that bears the names of residents killed in battle since WWI. Sadly, the memorial is running out of room. But in Tracy, where the tract homes grow closer to Oakland and Berkeley each day, the middle American values of duty and honor remain deeply anchored in the soil. “The loss of these men has totally affected everyone who lives here,” Councilwoman Irene Sundberg told the Mercury News earlier this year. “But it’s simply brought a lot of people closer to what they already felt about this war. It hasn’t necessarily changed their minds.” Meekness is the ability to endure injury without resentment. The city of Tracy upholds this definition.
