Anthony Chabot Camping, fishing, hiking, marksmanship, equestrian center, and other activities on 4,972 acres surrounding Lake Chabot. Redwood Rd., Oakland.

Antioch/Oakley Regional Shoreline Picnicking and kite flying, fishing off a 550-foot fishing pier on the San Joaquin River. North end of Bridgehead Rd., Antioch.

Ardenwood Historic Farm A working farm where visitors can see turn-of-the-century agricultural practices and help harvest crops. 34600 Ardenwood Blvd., Fremont.

Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve More than 529 acres offering horseback riding, hiking, kite flying, etc. Morgan Dr., San Ramon.

Black Diamond Mines Take a 400-foot guided walk through the Hazel-Atlas mine, an early-20th-century mine where workers once fashioned sand into glass. 5175 Somersville Rd., Antioch.

Briones The park’s 5,756 acres are home to deer, coyotes, squirrels, red-tailed hawks, vultures, and other creatures. Campground, archery range, hiking, horseback riding. 1200 Pleasant Hill Rd., Lafayette.

Brooks Island This 373-acre island in San Francisco Bay contains 2,500-year-old shellmounds left by the island’s original Indian habitants. Limited group guided tours. Must have own boat.

Browns Island A 595-acre island north of Pittsburg. Home to six rare and endangered plant species, and a variety of aquatic birds.

Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline Horseback riding, hiking, wildlife at 2,795 acres of bluffs and shoreline. Carquinez Scenic Dr. at Foster St., Martinez.

Claremont Canyon Quiet woodlands give way to a panorama of the bay. Stonewall Rd. and Dwight Way.

Contra Loma Year-round swimming in a lagoon with a sandy beach, fishing in an 80-acre reservoir. 1200 Frederickson Lane, Antioch.

Coyote Hills Alameda Creek, the county’s largest, passes through the park. 8000 Patterson Ranch Rd., Fremont.

Crown Memorial State Beach A 2.5-mile beach with sand dunes, bicycle trail. 8th St. and Otis Dr., Alameda.

Diablo Foothills Interesting geology, beautiful wildflowers, and a variety of bird and animal life. No facilities. 1700 Castle Rock Rd., Walnut Creek.

Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary A rest stop for thousands of birds during the fall migration. At the bayshore end of Park St., Alameda.

Garin/Dry Creek Pioneer Nature tours, picnicking, hiking, riding trails, fishing. Be sure to catch the late-summer apple festival.1320 Garin Ave., Hayward.

Hayward Regional Shoreline On 1,682 acres, including salt-, fresh-, and brackish-water marshes, and the San Lorenzo Trail. 3010 West Winton Ave, Hayward.

Huckleberry Botanic A 235-acre ecological preserve with a year-round display of rare plants. No dogs, bicycles, or horses. On Skyline Blvd. between Broadway Terr. and Snake Rd., Oakland.

Kennedy Grove A relaxed setting for picnics with large grassy areas for sports at the base of San Pablo Dam at Castro Ranch Rd., Richmond.

Lake Chabot Fishing, boating, bicycling, trails, and seasonal lake tours aboard the Chabot Queen. 17930 Lake Chabot Rd., Castro Valley.

Las Trampas Regional Wilderness More than 3,798 acres of wilderness and trails. Also contains the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site in Danville. 18012 Bollinger Canyon Rd., San Ramon.

Leona Canyon Regional Open Space Preserve A wooded canyon within a 271-acre park near Merritt College. Campus Dr. off Keller Ave. east of I-580, Oakland.

Little Hills Ranch A 25-acre picnic park available by reservation only. Next to Las Trampas on Bollinger Canyon Rd., San Ramon.

Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline A 1,220-acre park protecting the remainder of the San Leandro Bay marshlands. Picnic area, boat ramp. Doolittle Dr. and Swan Way, Oakland.

Martinez Regional Shoreline Fishing, bird-watching, exercise course, and marina with a boatyard, fuel, bait shop, restaurant, and bar. During rodeo season, a horse arena offers competition for youthful riders. Joe Di Maggio Dr. at North Court St., Martinez.

Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline Shoreline picnic area, secluded cove with swimming, and a hilltop with North Bay views. 900 Dornan Dr., Richmond.

Mission Peak It’s a strenuous hike to the top, but you get great views and access to the Ohlone Wilderness Trail. East end of Stanford Ave., off Mission Blvd., Fremont.

Morgan Territory The sandstone hills of this park feature wildflowers, deer, coyote, and occasional mountain lions. 9401 Morgan Territory Rd., Livermore.

Ohlone Wilderness Accessible via hike or ride along Ohlone Wilderness Trail. Home of 3,800-foot Rose Peak. Parking lots at Del Valle Regional Park, Sunol Regional Wilderness, and Mission Peak Regional Preserve.

Oyster Bay Picnicking, bird-watching, bay views. End of Neptune Dr., San Leandro.

Pleasanton Ridge A 3,163-acre park, with hiking, riding trails, bicycling, and sweeping canyon views. Foothill Rd., Pleasanton.

Point Isabel A 21-acre landscaped park offering fishing, jogging, bird-watching, kite flying, and — most notably — dog walking. End of Isabel St., Richmond.

Point Pinole A 2,315-acre wooded parkland with trails, wildflowers, beaches, and a 1,250-foot fishing pier. 5555 Giant Hwy., Richmond.

Quarry Lakes Swimming, fishing, sailboarding, canoeing, and boats with electric-powered motors. 2100 Isherwood Way, Fremont.

Redwood Regional Park A hidden redwood forest inside 1,863 acres. Hiking, horseback riding, and biking trails. 7867 Redwood Rd., Oakland.

Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve Round Top Peak features lava and volcanic debris from a 10-million-year-old volcano. 6800 Skyline Blvd, Oakland.

Roberts Regional Recreation Area Pool complex features heated swimming. Trail connections inside the park for bicyclists, runners, and hikers. 10570 Skyline Blvd., Oakland.

Round Valley Regional Preserve A 2,024-acre wildlife refuge boasting eagles, ground squirrels, the San Joaquin pocket mouse, the San Joaquin kit fox, and the California red-legged frog. Marsh Creek Rd., about two miles east of Deer Valley Rd., Clayton.

Shadow Cliffs An 80-acre lake with waterslide, picnic grounds, windsurfing rentals and lessons, and boat launch. 2500 Stanley Blvd., Pleasanton.

Sobrante Ridge Botanic A 277-acre preserve featuring the rare Alameda manzanita bird as well as other indigenous plant and animal species. End of Coach Dr. past Carriage Dr., Richmond.

Sunol Regional Wilderness Camping, hiking, backpacking, horse riding, and rock climbing in a 6,858-acre wilderness area. Geary Rd., Fremont.

Temescal Swimming, fishing, sunbathing, and picnicking. 6500 Broadway, Oakland.

Tilden Park A steam train, carousel ride, picnicking, fishing, swimming, and golf course. Entrances off Wildcat Canyon Rd. and Grizzly Peak Blvd. in Berkeley.

Waterbird Regional Preserve A 198-acre area that contains Al McNabney Marsh, a home for migratory birds as well as species of waterfowl and shorebirds. Waterfront Rd. and Waterbird Way, Martinez.

Wildcat Canyon Trails for hiking and horseback riding. Arlington Ave. and McBryde Ave., El Cerrito.

Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area Bike trails, fishing, boat ramps, windsurfing, windmills. Seven miles off I-580 at the Grant Line Rd. exit, Livermore.

East Shore Eight miles of shoreline extending from the Bay Bridge to the Shoreline Trail in Richmond. A work in progress; ultimately it will include 1,817 acres of land.

Franks Tract State Recreation Area A popular destination for fly-fishing and hunting waterfowl that is only reachable by water. Located southeast of Brannan Island between False River and Bethel Island.

Lake Del Valle Fishing, swimming, and boat launching and rental as well as 3,997 acres for hiking, horseback riding, and nature study. 7000 Del Valle Rd., Livermore.

Mount Diablo State Park Hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and camping. Mount Diablo Scenic Blvd., Danville.

PUBLIC GARDENS

Berkeley Rose Garden More than 3,000 rose bushes and 250 varieties of roses, along with tennis courts, picnic area, trails, ornamental pool, amphitheater. Euclid Ave. and Bayview Pl., Berkeley, 510-644-6530.
