Witching Hour

Ladytron remains arguably the best and likely the most popular electroclash act around. While others in this new-wave-inspired genre go all-out with gay pomp and trashy glamour, this black-clad Liverpool quartet is relatively composed, rather slick, and decidedly smart-looking, subtly worming their way into fans’ hearts with gleaming, perfect chord progressions performed on analogue synths and wrapped around the delicious, girly-sounding vocals of Helen Marnie. Like Ladytron’s first two albums, Witching Hour is packed with dancefloor-packers: “Destroy Everything You Touch” has the perfect sing-along chorus, while “Soft Power” is a desolate, pulsing, post-industrial number with an apocalyptic groove. For Ladytron, it’s all about mood, both upbeat and dejected. There are few acts crafting dance music as sophisticated and exquisite as this.
