A run with "good schwag"

SAT 11/13

Feel like running through scenic Tilden Park between Berkeley and Orinda this Saturday, along wooded trails with flat and rolling sections, at varying distances with remarkable views and ample water stations? How about running to benefit Children’s Hospital Research Center in Oakland? Still not convinced? How about the presence of “good schwag”? Gotcha! The East Bay Trail Run Series event gets off-road and into the eucalyptus trees at 8 a.m. There are eight age categories, from fourteen and under to seventy-plus, for males and females. The $30 (per race) raceday fee includes T-shirt, goodie bag, and postrace. Raceday registration opens at 6:30 a.m., or visit Recreation4Fun.com for more details. — Kelly Vance

Simply the Best

The Cal women’s swimming team is holding an ace for the fourth straight year — senior Natalie Coughlin. The Concord swimmer is considered all-world in backstroke and butterfly, and her free-style and individual medley aren’t too shabby, either. Ms. Coughlin has been NCAA and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year the past three seasons, and as she and the six other All-Americans on head coach Teri McKeever’s Bears swimming and diving squad prepare to face University of the Pacific this Saturday (12 noon), they are rated No. 7 nationally. Meanwhile on the men’s side, diver Louie Gagnet and butterfly specialist Patrick O’Neil lead the team against UOP at 1 p.m., also at Cal’s Spieker Aquatics Complex. Bored with the Raiders?

Monster Park. Has a nice ring to it. Repeat it to yourself slowly, like a soothing, brain-dead victory/defeat/what-does-it-matter mantra, as your SUV sits axle-deep in the parking-lot mud in the minutes and hours following the 49ers‘ epic struggle against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday. Monster Park. Certainly the 49ers have not played monstrously this season. Their current record is not an indication of their ability, only their iffy luck. Tim Rattay, Kevan Barlow, Fred Beasley, Cedrick Wilson — all decent players, but they’re not catching the breaks, even against dismal failures like the Chicago Bears. Meanwhile the team’s feckless owners tease the news media with phantom offers to buy the team. Larry Ellison’s SF Oracles? Come on. The Faithful will meet Sunday at 1:15 p.m. Wear red and gold.
