.Head Like a Kite

Random Portraits of the Home Movie

Mixing quirky electropop with actual audio taken from his family’s Super 8 vacation movies (a much-beloved late-’70s fad) — Head Like a Kite, the solo debut of Sushirobo guitarist Dave Enmio, is so authentic you can almost hear the heat radiating off the camera’s projection bulb. That intimacy oozes from these computer-processed guitar atmospherics, plenty experimental but still throwing an occasional nod to big-time guitar-rock juggernauts like Broken Social Scene. The electro beats powering “Your Butt Crack Smile” shimmer and segue with hairpin precision into pure pop majesty (think Robert Smith moaning “In Between Days”), while clips of scraped knees and backyard barbecues skip by, backed ethereally by dubbed-out bass and drums. Somehow, this collage of retro memories, wispy Dinosaur Jr. hooks, and indie electropop works without a hitch.
