.DJ Assault

Jefferson Ave. (Intuit-Solar)

“All I wanna know is who’s fucking tonight”; “Stick this dick in your ear”; “I love pussy”; “Your mama, your daddy, your sista’s a ho” — these are just a small sampling of the lyrics on DJ Assault’s new album Jefferson Ave. The raunch-loving Detroit DJ is back kicking it with the “hoes” and “bitches” on his full-length studio debut, throwing down club-friendly pelvis-grinders for all who want to get laid (and don’t we all?). The new album combines Timbaland-style snare beats with Rick James-bred keyboards, minimal arrangements, and playfully infantile lyrics (think ninth-grade boy here). Assault insists he’s creating a new genre of music, calling it “accelerated funk.” (No longer are we to mistake Assault’s music as “ghetto tech,” which he insists is now a lame term.)

Assault slows down the pace considerably on Jefferson Ave. while purposely funking up the ass-bottom, essentially making a hip-hop album with techno and electro elements. And for a guy who blows through tracks as fast as he can slap them on the turntable (his last album, the live DJ mix Off the Chain for the Y2K, featured an astounding 83 tracks in one hour), it’s refreshing to be able to hear the entire version of tracks such as “Nut in Your Eye,” “Hoes Be Trickin,” and “Nipples-N-Clits.” Assault is semifamous for the strip club hit “Ass-N-Titties” (chorus: “Ass, titties, ass ass, titties titties, ass-n-titties“), though the “2001” version on Ave. falls limp. Overall, despite the barrage of sexist scenarios and the simple, repetitive elements on the album, it’s hard not to like Jefferson Ave. This certainly isn’t an album that will pop your skull off in amazement upon initial listens, but thank God for sloppy seconds.
