Dignity and Shame

The latest outing from former Archers of Loaf frontman Eric Bachmann will inevitably be the most gorgeous, heartbroken album you’ve stumbled across in quite some time. Swimming in trickling strings and wispy croons, Dignity and Shame finds Bachmann making sense of love and loss through songs that move like a rush of emotion. Why won’t you fall back in love with me? he begs on the sad yet warming “Sleep All Summer,” his gruff vocals sounding like a cross between Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. We take our empty hearts and fill them up with broken things, adds Australian singer Lara Meyerratken, whose ethereal vocals pop up throughout the record and provide a welcome addition to Bachmann’s raw folk-rock approach, as do the brief appearances of Spanish guitar, lap steel, and trumpet. Full of melancholy melodies, Dignity and Shame is unmistakably the sound of a heart breaking.
