510 Skateboarding

What do rhetoric majors do after they graduate from UC Berkeley? “Own a skate shop,” says Dandelion Bordow, owner of 510 Skateboarding. Four years ago, Bordow and business partner Jerry Harris realized there was a glaring need for a good skate shop near campus. They often found themselves driving across the bridge just to get good parts or new gear. So they sketched out a business plan. “The biggest thing I learned at Cal,” says Bordow, “was just how to set a goal and see it through successfully.” Mission accomplished. When the pair’s shop opened at the corner of Dwight and Telegraph, it was squeezed into a former photo lab. Two years later, 510 took over the space next door and inherited a huge 15 x 15 display window. Bordow and Harris balked at filling the window with mannequins or elaborate decorations, opting instead for an art wall. Each month, a different local skater’s stuff is on display at 510. “We’ve got a lot of friends who are both artists and skaters,” Bordow says. “The two communities overlap, so we just wanted to support them.” Again, mission accomplished.
