.Best Radio DJ

Davey-D

In this era of corporate consolidation and mass-market conglomeration, the radio personality has become something of an endangered species. David “Davey-D” Cook, however, is a throwback to the days when radio DJs were an integral part of the community. In addition to emceeing many local events and appearing on panels at conferences nationwide, Cook helped to organize last year’s “Hip-Hop by the Bay” exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. He also serves as Webmaster of one of hip-hop’s most extensive Web sites and authors the “FNV” newsletter, which reaches an estimated 100,000 subscribers. Ever since he started on KALX in the late ’80s, Cook has brought a sense of intelligence and thoughtfulness to the airwaves that’s been noticeably absent from most programming that targets the so-called hip-hop generation. Whether he’s playing new music, waxing political, or stating his opinion on topics like the N-word, Cook’s shows always present food for thought. Here’s an indication of how Cook is regarded by his constituency: after he was unceremoniously fired from Clear Channel outpost KMEL — days after airing a Barbara Lee interview — supporters picketed KMEL’s offices and demanded his return to the commercial airwaves. It didn’t happen, but the good news is you can still hear Davey-D’s “Friday Night Vibe” show regularly on KPFA.
