Countless papers and projects have been fueled by Berkeley Espresso’s
coffee. And no wonder: The place is pretty much the Platonic ideal of a
great study cafe, down to the smallest details. The wi-fi is fast, the
staff is always friendly but never oppressively so, the food is
uncomplicated and substantial, the bathrooms are surprisingly clean,
the classical music is unobtrusive, and the cafés au lait are
transcendent. You’ll never get a dirty look for staying long after
you’re done with your drink, it’s open till eleven, and — the
true test of a great study spot — there are plenty of outlets,
strung from the cafe’s many potted trees. At the corner of Shattuck and
Hearst, it’s just two blocks away from the west side of campus, but far
enough away that you won’t run into every classmate, hallmate, and
former hookup in your addled and overcaffeinated state. There’s even
outdoor seating for when you break down and need a stress cigarette. It
really just can’t get much better.
