.Best Neighborhood Park: Scramble up those rocks, kiddies!

Cragmont Rock Park

Far, far from the bay, but with an expansive view of it, this tiny but beautiful space was created by its neighbors when they bought the land and then gave it to the city to maintain as their near-private park in 1920. The views, plus the park’s elegant picnic gazebo with built-in barbecue, offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a quiet afternoon outdoors without having to jostle with the masses. You might want to bus, bike, or hike up there, though; there’s no off-street parking and very little on street parking available, and certainly the neighbors like it like that. In an historic aside, Dick Leonard, the “father of technical climbing,” was an early fan of Claremont Rock Park, one of several Berkeley parks that seems to encourage public rock clambering. www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/parks/parkspages/CragmontRock.html
