With shelves of Middle Eastern groceries and deli cases full of hummus,
baba ghanoush, tabouleh, kotlet, spanakopita, and
tah-cheen, it’s easy to pass over the selection of sweets that
Zand’s has to offer. However, doing so would be a huge mistake. Baklava
made in the store is the most obvious stop on the Middle Eastern sweet
train, and you could easily overindulge your sweet tooth with the
different varieties they have on hand. Almonds, pistachios, and
cardamom all take turns in the spotlight with flaky phyllo and
indulgent honey. Prepackaged treats run between $8 and $10 each and
include sohan (almond brittle) and different mashups of
pistachios, almonds, marzipan, and rose water. The true prize is when
you can grab a tray of bamieh or zolbia before they sell
out. Fluffy pillows of fried dough, bamieh are completely soaked
through with sticky honey and aromatic rose water; super sweet, a few
go a long way … even though you’ll have trouble stopping after the
first few morsels.
