.Best International Radio Program: Place to hear didgeridoo and dancehall

Music of the World

It’s Earth Day and the entrancing sounds of Tuvan throat singers groan from the radio. It’s on Music of the World with host Stephen Kent on KPFA 94.1 FM in Berkeley. Heard every Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to noon, Kent presents earthy roots music grounded in tradition but doesn’t ignore the current global pop fusion stews simmering. Musical offerings vary, but lean toward Africa, Asia, Europe, and the aboriginal music of Australia. Along with his savvy radio skills, Kent also is one of the top didgeridoo players in the world and an expert on the indigenous musics from Down Under. But this is only one piece of a marvelous show presented on KPFA on weekdays with hosts Kutay Derin Kugay (Mon.), Victoria (Tues.), Avotcja & Doug Edwards (Wed.), and David McBurnie (Fri.). Each personality represents a unique cross-section of humanity as expressed through music. From Victoria’s AlterLatino mixes with Los Aterciopelados, Avotcja’s odes to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Edwards and the Spirituals, and mighty McBurnie when he hits that pocket playing dancehall soca and salsa. Aren’t you glad you live in the Bay Area?
