.Best Hope for Oakland

Robert Bobb

Earlier this year, former City Manager Robert Bobb strongly indicated
that he planned to move back to Oakland and run for mayor in 2010. But
ever since, he has remained mum. Was he teasing us? Did he change his
mind after the feds dropped their investigation of ex-state Senator Don
Perata? Or is he just too damn busy saving Detroit public schools?
According to news reports from the Motor City, Bobb has been a one-man
buzz saw there. As financial czar of the most troubled school district
in the nation, he has routed out corruption, helping get one
high-ranking official indicted, while exposing numerous instances of
theft and wrongdoing by public employees. Plus, he has played hardball
with the local unions, laying off about 1,000 teachers and closing 29
schools, thereby saving the nearly bankrupt district $170 million. In
other words, Robert Bobb is perfect for Oakland. He’s a no-nonsense
leader who is unafraid of making enemies while doing what needs to be
done. Plus, there’s no one else on the local political scene who can
match his hands-on executive experience. Certainly not Perata, a
politician who always puts his friends and donors first. The only
question is — will Bobb run? At this point, it looks as if he
needs some coaxing. How about a Draft Robert Bobb for Mayor campaign?
