.Best Free Date: Where stargazing might get you somewhere

Telescope-gazing at Chabot Observatory

If you do happen to score a date with the Best Bartender or Best Crushworthy Celeb, why not take ’em here? With wow-worthy close-up views of Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and other astronomical phenomena (such as craters on the Moon and two comets approaching this summer) through three big telescopes, a weekend evening at Chabot is like an IMAX version of a night under the stars — and even the parking is free. Plus, waiting in line for your turn at each ‘scope affords a couple of stargazers a) chances to look through dozens of smaller telescopes set up by amateur astronomers; b) romantic views of the East Bay and San Francisco city lights; c) time for and topics of conversation (“I actually watched that moon pass behind Saturn!”); and d) snuggling opportunities (it’s usually a tad nippy). Bring a thermos of hot chocolate or perhaps a little wine and see the night sky in a whole new way.
