.Best Community Garden: Returning to the Garden of Eatin’

Alameda Point Community Garden

A mix of produce, personality, and mission blends perfectly at Alameda Point Community Garden. On one side of Pensacola Lane, Mien farmers — descended from an agriculturally based hill tribe from Thailand — use traditional farming methods to grow crops on a large swath. On the other side, Alamedans of all sorts tend their family beds of tomatoes, lettuces, chard, corn, and beans. Local teens with the Alameda Point Collaborative cultivate large beds of greens to mitigate the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in the nearby low-income community. These same knowledgeable youths also help run the gardens, creating a delightful, friendly atmosphere. The spaces outside the beds are filled with wild flowers, herbs, strawberries, budding fruit trees, and, on one end, bees from a couple of beehives buzz in the spring air. Beds are still available (to Alameda residents only) for this growing season.
