August 13, and every Sunday till the racing season is over, entrance is
a dollar, hot dogs are a dollar, beer is a dollar, and the bets are two
bucks, all rounded out with cheesy live 1970s soul and disco hits from
a live band in a corner stage. How can this not be heaven? The thunder
of the hooves, the static announcements crackling over ancient
loudspeakers, the brief ecstatic joy of victory and the crushing loss
of defeat, does life get better? Where else could you watch a mixture
of Laotian betters, porkpie-hatted debtors, and families young and old
with kids in tow learning about how life really works? If you win it’s
all free, if you lose, it’s a day’s worth of entertainment for twenty
